Solar Fans for Greenhouse

Post by dennish » Thu Apr 16, 2015 2:12 pm

I've been on the lookout for a solar fan solution for the GH, if anyone has any recommendations I would be grateful.

I ordered a Solar Fan from Maplin, it was much smaller than I expected and at £12.99 quite frankly not worth bothering with, you would need several to make any difference at all which would work out really expensive.

So browsing Ebay, I have taken a punt on a batch of these small clip on units... £12ish for 6. my hope is that dotted around the GH they will at least get some air moving on warm, still days... at just over £2 each on the the slow boat from china, thought it was worth a gamble... will let you know how they turn out. If they work out OK, I may well treat each plant to it's own individual fan!

It would be cheap and self regulating to make a solar chimney. Worth considering? No moving parts!

Very interesting Jeremy, not sure how this could be incorporated into an existing GH structure? Do you use this method at all?

Dennis I have no experience of this but in principle it's so simple and elegant that I think I should give it a go.

From the internet I can get 100mm corrugated extractor hose of the type you use to connect to the back of the tumble dryer. A 4m length for £2.80.
I plan on making a rectangular frame to hold 4 of these hoses, side by side, to rest on the edge of the roof vent. I'd then paint the top 75cm or so of these hoses black to absorb heat and create the chimney effect and run the hoses to different positions in the greenhouse.

Not to put too fine a point on it, your greenhouse is immaculate whereas my greenhouse looks like a pikey's shed. I can do this because the aesthetic damage has already been done and I realise you don't have the same luxury. I'll keep you posted if this gets underway and I have positive results. :P
