New GH build

Post by mrholmes166 » Sun Feb 05, 2017 5:42 pm

Well my old gh which was two 8x6ft cobbled together sold mid January and I've been meaning to get out and start wrecking the garden in order to get some foundations ready for concreting but a bout of pneumonia has laid me up for a fortnight, so Saturday pm I dragged the lad (teenager) reluctantly from his stinking pit and coerced him into getting grubbier (he don't wash he's a teenager lol) so we began by setting out our approximate area which I plan to use as my new bolt hole and proceeded to get stuck in clearing the ground as much as we could removing about 4" of spoil and setting out our casting bar.
We was due to carry on today (Sunday) but due to a family bereavement this was suspended (rip Brian my father in law) and we hopefully will be able to continue shortly. Here's some before and afters of the ground clearance.
We've still some more prep work to do before we can cast the slab, which include some drainage pipes and a cast concrete reservoir sunk below floor level. ImageImageImageImageImage
Like a fool I only refilled that water butt Saturday morning so the fish would be ok that live inside it!!

Si, sorry to hear about your illness and bereavement. Must be a tough time. I hope the greenhouse project is a distraction rater than a hindrance.

How big is it? I like the sound of a cast concrete reservoir below ground. That's at least a heat sink to even out winter temps. Actually it sounds ideal for a sump tank in an aquaponic system. Gwon! You know you want to! You already have the fish... :P

Thanks for the kind words jez I think the toughest time are yet to come, the funeral will be the one that brings it all home to the family but as always we'll work together as one to pull through it.
Now aquaponics is a thought and I suppose I'm already there as that fish water butt is all I use to water my current stable of plants. Not sure the fish would like a dark closed tank but my Dutch bucket system will be living it I'm sure nice consistent water temp with great oxygenation they should thrive exceptionally well.
Size wise we're looking at 4m wide 3m deep right hand side tapering off to 2m left hand side with a height of 2.4m front and 2m rear constructed from polycarbonate sheets 10mm thick and in 1m wide sections this will be fixed to 3x2 treated timbers that form the frame. It will hopefully become my winter grow room as my current grow room is in need of some tec after this season is done but one thing at a time lol

Yay, Fab!! I'm just picturing the awesome when that slab goes down.

Re the spoil heap, just think of the Wooden Horse. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0043147/
But avoid the living room. The Mrs will notice it clogging the hoover. :P

I guess I'll just have to bag it up and take to the skip at work!

Not made much progress since last update apart from putting in the ducts for the power and return to reservoir drain. Spoil heap is slowly dwindling. Hopefully concrete will be laid in next few wks, but lots of family issues have really put pay to the proper bespoke gh I wanted this year so it may be a polytunnel to alllw me to grow

And finally after some very stressful weeks with a few family issues I've managed to get the concrete mixed and laid.
The original plan for a bespoke gh has had to be shelved for this year so I've brought a polytunnel and a few sleepers on which it'll be mounted to give me some extra height. Can't wait for next wknd to get assembling the poly.

Sorry to hear of your family issues. That's the important stuff. I hope things are resolving for you there.

That slab looks fine. I hope the polytunnel gives you a great season and time to do the rest of the build at your own, right pace. :P

One water feature installed!
1200mm deep 600mm diameter reservoir should keep the nutrient solution cool and give me plenty of it to not worry about constantly topping it up
