I bought more crap from China :D

Post by horsebones » Tue May 23, 2017 5:03 pm

Disclaimer, I really don't recommend buying any of these cheap brands. I'm just curious to see what bottom dollar get's you.

So I came across this for 28€ (about £24,25) while I was searching for a replacement for another Chinese LED that lasted about a year. It's running at 38W (includes power for fan).

Packaging and accessories

The instructions said to use it 50cm to 1.5m distance from the plant, but I've got mine running about 20cm from the new growth. This is the point the heat drops off.

Recommended continuous working time 10-16 hours.

Recommended for indoor use only (probably has issues with humidity).

Upon inspection, I noticed the diodes were pretty mucky! I decided to take it apart and try and clean them up. With a cotton swab and some rubbing alcohol, I managed to get most of it off. There was some residue that was too stubborn, but I didn't want to start using anything too abrasive, so I left it on.

Driver details

Heat sink (or lack of one )

How it looks turned on (Note, it will screw with your eyes! Best not have it in a living space)

Note, this is the first day using it. Those plants were not grown with this light. I'll probably be taking them outside in a week or two, so I won't test this properly until the winter (perhaps that's why a lot of lights seem to be discounted at the moment).

I hope this post was interesting to someone.

I've just started some seedlings under this light. I'll post some pictures of them in the near future which you can find in the grow logs section of the forum.

I've been testing my recent buys from China with my new watt meter (also from China).

This was advertised as 50W. It puts out 40W and surprisingly low heat, but still requires a heat sink. Costs about 8€ with the power supply.

This one is advertised as 50W. It puts out 57W. It runs very hot and burns your retinas good 8) Definitely requires a heat sink. Costs about 6€ with the power supply. You can also buy the two separate. This one wasn't very well packaged though.

Lol, not very safe, especially if you are not a qualified electrician.

I've been running the larger one with one of these heatsinks for a while and it's been fine, although it's very hot (and probably dangerous).

I tried to drill holes for the second one on a computer cpu with fan mount, but I messed up and haven't had the time to try again. I've also recently bought one of these, but still waiting for it to come. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/EnwYe-L ... 4c4d7PBVrT

What kind of grow lights would you deem as safe? I have looked in to them, but the brand light I’ve been advised to get are wickedly expensive... were talking £400 upwards..

I love my chillis and really wanted to get a nice room for overwintering but those prices do seem a bit high.

I wouldn’t leave my house with these things on. You aren’t concerned that they might burn down your place?

Lights I deem safe are those that have been put together by the manufacturer and have some kind of safety accreditation. I have my lights on at night, so at least I'm there if they were to ever catch fire. I also have smoke alarms there to signal me if something is happening. I guess I'm a pretty reckless guy by most standards.
