Carolina Reaper - buds already?

Post by ThePhoenix »

Hi All

Haven't been on the forum for a few years, as all has been going well and nothing much to report, I guess.

I have decided this year to try my hand at The Carolina Reaper, so along with a couple of the usual suspects, I ordered myself up a plug. This came two weeks ago and is looking fine in its first pot on my windowsill.

What I am looking for advice on is what appears to be buds forming (see attached pic). It is under 50mm high, what gives? Is this a normal behaviour, does anyone know? Should I just pick them off as they form, until later in the season, or just let them be?

If this is unusual, what have I done to trigger this and what is the remedy?

Thank in advance

just guessing - it may be due to a too small pot restricting growth and forming buds. my advice would be to remove the buds and repot into a larger container. hopefully someone with real knowledge will post.

welcome back!!

Using a high potash / phosphorus feed can also cause early budding - if you're feeding, try one with more nitrogen?

You did get it from somewhere reputable, didn't you? I.e. it's not an ebay reaper? Mind you there are multiple buds per node so that's looking promising.

It came from World of Chillies.

As I said, it is a two-week old plug, so the roots have hardly had any time to spread into the pot, so it is far from pot-bound. I don't feed until later in the season, when the flowers start to appear, so it's had no food either.

What is the consensus: pick these buds off, or just let them be and let the plant do as it pleases?

Leave the plant alone, it knows what it is doing better than you do.

I've done just that. It's got buds all over it now and seems to be fit and healthy; growing well.

I'll report back in a few weeks with a status report.

Cheers all.

It has flowers and baby fruits. Not a Carolina Reaper I'm thinking. I bought three plugs at the same time and was VERYcareful when handling and labelling them. I'm wondering if the supplier may have no been so careful and that this may be the jalapeño, as the one I have marked up as jalapeño is right next to it and showing no signs of flowering.

It's not an ebay Reaper, is it? Disappointing for you.

It's one of three plugs from World of Chillies, a group that should be a: jalapeño; cayenne; and a reaper.

The one labelled as a reaper, has fruits already and they look very jalapeñoy. The cayenne is looking authentic and is budding. The one labelled as the jalapeño is showing no signs of buds and I am holding out hope that this is the reaper.

Either World of Chillies, or I have swapped a label somewhere, or at least that is the hope. Whatever this adventure turns out to be, I have three healthy plants at the moment.
